At the New Lebanon church of Christ, a church of Christ located in the greater Dayton Ohio area, you’ll find a group of Christians doing all we can to worship as they did in the first century using the Bible as our only guide. That means we look for the Pattern and Authority in scripture for any doctrine, belief or practice as we seek to follow God’s Commands, praise and serve His High and Holy Name, and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. The Bible is God’s inspired Word and the Complete revelation of His Will for man to love, serve and honor Him. Anything else outside of God’s Word is not from God, and should be rejected, again going back to the Bible as the only source for the Pattern and Authority we use to conduct ourselves as Christians. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Galatians 1:8-9)
The Bible outlines the way to become a Christian, and gain eternal Salvation; this is often referred to as the “Gospel Plan of Salvation” –
- Hear God’s word (Romans 10:17)
- Believe in His gospel (John 3:16)
- Confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God (1 John 2:23)
- Repent of the sinful ways that separate us from God (Acts 3:19)
- Be baptized for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38)
- Live faithfully (Revelation 2:10)
If you come and visit us, you might notice that things are different here than at some other places. The simple explanation for that difference is outlined by something Jesus said in Luke 6:46; “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do the things that I say?” You see, if we claim that Jesus is Lord and ourselves as Christians, then we need to honor Him as the Lord of each of us, and as the Head of His church. So, to honor Jesus as our Lord, we worship in the same fashion that the early followers of Jesus did as recorded in Scripture. Here are some of the aspects of worship you can expect to see;
- Congregational acapella singing: “…teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19).
- Prayers offered up to God: “always offering prayer for you in my joy” (Philippians 1:4).
- On the first day of every week, we partake of the Lord’s Supper to remember His death: “Now on the first day of the week when the disciples came together to break bread” (Acts 20:7).
- Teaching from God’s word with Scripture reading and a lesson: “…they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
- The members of the Lord’s church at New Lebanon take part in contributing to the needs of the church in a collection (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). This is a privilege and responsibility of those who have identified with the Lord’s body at this local congregation. If you visit with us, you will be our honored guest! You will not be asked to give any money as this is duty for the members of this congregation. We simply ask that you spend some time with us after services that we might get to know you better!
Everything you hear or see done here will have a scriptural reason behind it. We are not here to fix society’s problems, or to take your money, or to entertain you. Our purpose is to Worship God in the way He has told us, build up the followers of Christ, share the gospel with those who have not heard it or obeyed it, and to tend to the disciples of Jesus who have needs.
